Microsoft and Apple alternative

Given that I just posted a new article about the upcoming Windows 7 Release Candidate, I thought it fitting to provide some generalized discussion about an alternative operating system, Linux. Rather than always choosing the main stream OS, some people like to venture out into the wild a bit and give a distribution of Linux a whirl.

I've tried to capture my limited experience with Linux and provide some alternatives to the main stream operating systems, Windows and Mac OSX, as well as alternatives to Office, and provide information about gaming on the Linux OS. There's a ton more that can be found by searching the web.

I've only tried Ubuntu 7.04, 8.04, 8.10 and 9.04 as well as Kubuntu 9.04 and I've liked the progress shown in each build. Linux is a viable alternative to Windows or Mac OSX if given the opportunity. It would be even better if the main stream software companies would provide native support for their productivity software and games. There are several distributions of Linux available, so there's probably one that'll fit your needs.

Please take the time to read the discussion about a FREE alternative to the Windows and Mac operating system, Linux. You never know, you might just be compelled to try it.

Windows 7 Release Candidate coming soon

I know this isn't really gaming news but with all the hype behind the next realease of Windows 7 I figured it was front page worthy. Microsoft has released that the official public download date for W7 will be May 5th via the Windows 7 home page. Users of the MSDN site will be able to download the RC on April 30th.

Take some time to add your thoughts on the upcoming release of the Windows 7 RC in the technical help section of the forums.

COD: WaW Map Pack 1 release announced

The date is set! Map pack 1 will be available March 19th. Below is the info from callofduty.com.

This new Map Pack will include three new Multiplayer maps (Station, Knee Deep and Nightfire), and one new Nazi Zombie Co-Op level (Verr�ckt).

"The Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 1 will be available for download on Xbox Live and PSN on March 19, 2009. More information on the PC release date coming soon.

In preparation for this, we have created this new microsite page to contain all the Map Pack 1 related media (screenshots, video, etc). We’ve already got our first batch of screens up there so be sure to go check it out � and keep checking back for more updates as we get closer to the March 19th release!"

Bungie Logs 1 Billionth Halo 3 Game

There's been a ton of games played and last night Bungie recorded it's 1 billionth game played on Halo 3. Apparently is was a game of infection that lasted around 3 minutes or so. Follow the links below to learn more.

Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack skulls revealed

The guys at joystiq have a video posted that shows the locations of the mythic map pack skulls. THe one on Sandbox is goingt o be a fun one to get. Watch the video below if you want to see where they are.

Halo Wars release is coming...are you ready?

Everyone who knows about Halo knows that Halo Wars is releasing March 3rd. Most Gamestop locations are having a Halo Wars midnight launch event to celebrate the launch of the Halo based RTS. While the RTS happens in a world 20 years before the Halo event, it's still set to be another great addition to the Halo franchise. Although Bungie didn't actually make the game, Ensemble Studios, now Robot Entertainment, did a good job keeping the characters true to form.

COD:WaW get title update and free map

Treyarch finally got approval for the release of Title Update 2. In addition, they also provided the COD community with a free map to test the map download function that was added as part of the title update. The map is Makin during in the day. A list of the fixes in titel update 2 can be found in the forums or on the COD boards.

Mass Effect 2 Teaser

Halo Wars demo download sets record

According to an article on xbox.com, the Halo Wars demo was the most downloaded demo ever on teh first day of availability. In addition the game was downloaded over 2 million times by XBox Live Gold members in the first 5 days. People must really want to check out the game.
